haunting scripture
Can scripture haunt a person? And if it does... is it a good thing.
Recently I have been haunted by the verse. "let your yes be yes, and your no be no". Particularly the portion that says let your no be no.
So often we as Christians think that we are doers of EVERYTHING. We can't do everything. Really we can't. But we feel obligated when someone asks us to do something. We will put off family. We will put off almost anything to do something for someone in the church. This in moderation isn't a bad thing. But in excess you become like me. See... I can't say no. I just like saying yes. I like helping people. But what if it were God's will for me to say no. I know.. this is something rough to think about. But really. What if I say no? What then happens?
Bottom line is this. Say no. Be truthful. Do what you can. When you do this it helps everyone out. The people you say no to will find someone who can say yes and that someone can complete the task in a shorter amount of time than you cause they will be doing less things. So.. Let your No be No.

I'm the same way. I have hidden in the church basement until church started to avoid being asked to serve the Lord's Supper. Am I hell bound? No. I play in the band every Sunday and I was given this particular Sunday off. I wanted it to be a true day off. The service vultures in my church sense a warm body and they will hit you up to do something. This sounds bad, I know, but it is true to the extent that they only ask the same folks. There are some people in church who volunteer for nothing and thus just warm a pew. It's only natural, I suppose, that the willing are the ones who are asked time and time again. The willing are the ones who burn out.
Chris, good to see you back in the saddle and blogging away again.
Chris correct me if i am wrong but i don't think what you were talking about and what eric is complaining about is the same thing.
If you are at church already wouldn't you want to help serve?
If the band is too much of a burden that you can't serve communion i can pull some strings with the worship leader.
Good point Mike. Hey, we missed you at the Church picnic on Sunday. Where were you? Oh,ya, Duke Fest, that's right. Ya, I saw you duck out early at Carol Ann's wedding on Saturday too. Oh, and I hope she won't mind, you were supposed to be videoing it for her and all, hmmmmm. But you did do a good job preparing the communion before church. Oh, you did on Saturday and just left it out, that's right. I know God will understand if the sacrament that represents his blood is stale and a bit fermented. Hey, I'm getting a vision....it's a billboard....yes, yes, a billoard......with you on it.....yes, yes, it's all clear......AND THERE IS A BIG STINKN' LOG SHOOTING OUT OF YOU EYE.
LOL.... that was good. i try to help you out with the band thing and you bust me out like that on chris's blog.
hope you are still talking to me at the game tonight.
Why thank you mike... I had this one in me for a while... and wanted to refine it a lot.. But alas... needed to post so that I wouldn't loose you as a reader.
Man you guys are going at it... all while I am trying to type this message. I think that E is right. You can't do it all.. In fact how bout this... Oh I will do xxxxx for you (the church) ok... then you are late doing it. You do it poorly cause you don't have the time to do it properly. All while God's idea was to have someone else do it so that they could contribute.
How bout this... it is like your leg doing everything.. just your right leg.. you do all driving with your right leg. You steer you turn on the turn signal.. you work the gas and the break as well as shift gears... you do it all with your right leg. You eat with your right leg. You type on the keyboard with your right leg. You walk just with your right leg.. wait.. no you don't that is absurd. So.. the "body of Christ" should not operate off of just your right leg.
BTW. Stale communion is nasty.. put it in the fridge or something Mike.
i knew you would take his side. that hurts. it's like the old saying "co-workers are thicker than in-laws" or something like that. i will tuck my tail between my legs and go on my way.
